Match preview: Carlisle United

3 December 2021

Take a look at the latest stats and facts ahead of Town's second round Emirates FA Cup fixture with Carlisle United.

Shrewsbury Town take a break from Sky Bet League One action this weekend as the make the long journey up north to face League Two side Carlisle United in the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Spirits are high in Shropshire at the moment following two impressive results at Montgomery Waters Meadow in Salop’s last two games. A 1-1 draw against Sunderland last Wednesday and a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic on Saturday saw Salop climb out of the League One relegation zone.

Carlisle are not having the best of times in League Two so far this season. They have only won three league games this season and are only one point above the relegation zone. The Cumbrians are still adapting to life under new boss Keith Miller who took over at the end of October. Form has improved for Carlisle though under Miller as they have only lost two of their eight games in all competitions.

Name: Carlisle United

Founded: 1896 (125 years ago), as Shaddongate United

Chairman: Andrew Jenkins

Biggest Victory: 8-0 vs Hartlepool United, Division Three North, September 1928

Biggest Defeat: 1-11 vs Hull City, Division Three North, January 1939

Highest League Finish: 22nd Football League Division One, 1974-75

One to Watch: Zach Clough

Having joined in the summer following his release from Wigan Athletic, Clough has cemented himself as a regular starter for Carlisle this season. Goals have been hard to come by for Carlisle this season, only scoring 13 so far this season. Clough has only scored two goals this season but will be hoping to pick up a few more against Salop on Saturday.

Match report: Carlisle United 1 Shrewsbury Town 2

4 December 2021

Shrewsbury Town secure passage into the third round of the Emirates FA Cup with a 2-1 win away from home over Carlisle United

Shrewsbury Town's Emirates FA Cup second round fixture away from home with Carlisle United ended with Town securing passage into the third round of the competition.

Tom Bloxham and Ryan Bowman were the duo on hand to ensure Town left the north with the win.

Town started the game on the front foot and enjoyed an abundance of running room in the home side's half. That pressure early on counted as Tom Bloxham was able to strike Town into the lead in the 10th minute. The forward was able to latch onto a deflected Salop shot and our number 18 made no mistake in striking the ball through the Carlisle defence and into the back of the net.

Despite Town taking an early lead, the home outfit did have positive spells in the Town half. However, the Salop back five were able to block out any dangerous advances and limited the Cumbrians to distance shots and early crosses. A common theme throughout the first 45, Salop looked equally, if not more, dangerous on the counter-attack.

The second half ensued with similar patterns of play emerging. Both teams had moments in the opposition half but nothing to worry either shot-stopper. Marko Marosi was calm and composed in claiming the majority of the home side's crosses.

In the 78th minute, Ryan Bowman hit the back of the net to seemingly put the tie to bed. Town's forward latched onto an inch-perfect through ball from Dan Udoh, slid the ball onto his right foot to beat the man and slotted a powerful effort into the corner of the net.

However, the game wasn't done as the home side pulled a goal back through Jordan Gibson. Into added time, the forward made a run and towards the box and was able to slot the ball into the back of the net.

Despite the late scare, Town remained resolute and saw the game out to secure passage into the next round of the competition.
