Busy Week For Askey

9 June 2018

Update from Gaffer on a busy week behind the scenes

Town manager John Askey and CEO Brian Caldwell are deep into preparations of the squad for the forthcoming season.

Despite Caldwell being away this week at the EFL conference, the pair are in daily contact working towards bringing in Askey’s targets.

The new Gaffer gave his thoughts on a busy time for himself and the club.

“It’s usually the busiest time of pre-season for a manager, Askey said.

“We’re working hard to get the targets that we want and trying to get them in. We’re talking to plenty of players and I’m sure it won’t be too long until we sign one or two up.

“Everyday Brian and myself have been in contact, just talking to clubs and players. It’s a vital time. With Brian over in Portugal with all the other EFL clubs he’s also been able to talk to other clubs to try and move things along”

“It’s no use just signing anybody we have to make sure they are right for Shrewsbury.

“Once we have them in, it’s a case of looking at the squad and maybe fitting one or two in or around it.”

Despite offering Junior Brown a new two year contract, the defender decided to join newly promoted Coventry City. Askey was naturally disappointed.

“Sometimes there’s nothing you can do,” Jon said.

“Last year he had an injury and didn’t play as much as he would have liked.

“Coventry have come in and made him a decent offer so he went.”

Askey has also made further contact with the other players who have offers on the table. The Boss said: “I’ve made contact and now it’s just a matter of them making a decision on whether to stay or whether to go.

“It’s football, players don’t seem to stay at clubs for too long and if anybody goes then we have got other people on the radar.

“The players have 28 days to make their mind up and that’s what we’re waiting for now.”
