Stefan Payne post AFC Wimbledon

25 March 2018

Another match winning goal from Stefan Payne to take Town top.

Town picked up another 3 points at home to AFC Wimbledon to take them back to the top of the Sky Bet League One table.

Town’s goal came from a close range effort from Stefan Payne, which saw him score another match winning goal.

After the game Stef spoke to the press to give his thoughts on the game.

“It’s always good to score goals but to come back into the side and score the match winner that takes the team back to the top of the table is a great feeling”, said Stefan.

“I just smashed it in and sometimes the less time you have to think about it the better.

“I had a few chances in the game that I should have put away but the Gaffer said to me they’ve gone and thankfully the next one came to me and I put it away.”

Stefan has chipped in with some important goals over the season and his strike puts him up to 13 goals so far.  He’s had to bide his time recently with the form of Carlton Morris but is glad to back in the team.

“It’s always nice to score goals especially the winner and I’ve taken my chance”, said Stefan.

“I’ve been on the bench for a few weeks and I’ve had to wait for chance.

“My chance has come now and I’ve taken it.”

Recent games have shown the need for the whole of the squad to be ready.  Over the 90 minutes the players put in another good team performance to get the result.

“It was a great team performance today and once we had gone one ahead you couldn’t see us conceding”, said Stefan.

“Me and Carlton up top we were working hard for each other.

“It shows that it is a squad game, unfortunately Bryn has been sent off today so now it’s a chance for someone else to come in.”

The win over AFC Wimbledon puts Town back to the top of the Sky Bet League One table.  The success this season has gone under the radar of a lot of the press but Town are happy with that to continue.

“We don’t really get mentioned much in the press it’s always about Wigan and Blackburn”, said Stefan.

“We are still there and fighting and asking the question of Blackburn and Wigan.

“We have been doing that all season but we don’t want to get too carried away and just focus on Rochdale on Friday and get another win.

“Easter will ask a lot of us both mentally and physically with two games in quick succession but we always prepare well so hopefully we can end Easter with another 6 points.”

Over 6,000 Town fans were at the Montgomery Waters Meadow for the game and they were in fine voice.  Stef acknowledged the importance of the help that the crowd give the team.

“They are a massive part of this success, when you are tired you hear the fans cheering you on”, said Stefan.

“You hear that and think to keep going, keep going and get it through to the 90 minutes.”
