Mat Sadler looks back at Town's draw with Walsall

Shrewsbury Town earned a point on the road against Walsall last evening.

Askey’s men battled it out at the Banks’s stadium to earn a clean sheet against the Saddlers.

Mat Sadler was pleased to have earned a clean sheet, but the defender feels the game was too open from a defensive point of view.

“It was too open for my liking,” Sadler said post match. “I think there was probably too many chances created at both ends for both teams.

“It was difficult conditions for defending, the pitch was really hard underneath but soft on top, everyone was falling over.

“It was difficult conditions, it absolutely hammered it down before the game, which made it difficult.

“In reflection you probably would have taken a 0-0 draw at the start of the game, I certainly would have done as a defender.

“That’s something to grab a hold of and take into the next game. We definitely had chances to win the game, they had too many chances for my liking.”

Sadler was disappointed to not have taken all three points, but feels a draw was a fair result.

“In terms of both teams had chances, probably yeah a fair result,” Sadler said. “I’m surprised there weren’t any goals in the game.

“It was a nightmare for defending out there and a nightmare for goalkeeping with that surface.

“A draw is probably the fair result. It was two teams who both went at each other, both showed some grit and fight – wanting to not concede and secondly trying to score.

“It was two very competitive teams at the level, so the draw was probably the fair result.

“It’s always good to show you are desperately trying to defend the nil at the back of you’re net.

“From a defenders perspective its great to see that shut-out, but what I will say is there were too many chances.”
