Scott Golbourne Post Sunderland

Scott Golbourne reflects on Town's victory over Sunderland.

Today saw Scott Golbourne return to Town’s side. A solid performance from Scott as he replaced the injured Ryan Giles down the left side. With 90 minutes under his belt, a clean sheet and three points, Scott talked to Shrewsweb about today’s performance.

“It was an amazing feeling to come back and be involved in a game like that and pick up points. It was good, it’s been a long journey back. With not playing a league game since last game of last season, picking up the injury to my knee, the long slog of coming back over the summer and then sort of a stop, start beginning to the season, picking up little niggles and still not quite right, although sort of fit, maybe probably not fit enough to play at times and using the cup games to find my feet a little bit. So, it’s been a journey and today topped it off, it was an amazing feeling to be back and feel that I can contribute to the team and bring something a little bit different, a little bit experience and it’s an amazing feeling to be back.” Scott said.

Scott talked about his team’s performance after an emphatic victory over The Black Cats. “I think as a team, man for man, I think we were really good. We would’ve probably liked to get a little bit more of a foot-hold in the second half, although we showed a lot of resilience, we knew Sunderland are a good side, we know their magnitude of their club and they’re going to bring some support and they make it difficult for us. It was a good team performance; I think we all stuck together.”

Golbourne was full of praise for his team. The whole squad put a great shift in today and were the deserved winners of the game. “The lads worked incredibly hard, I think they took a look at their running stats in there earlier and they were through the roof. The ground that the lads covered, and everyone helped each other. There were small moments in the game, sometimes Norbs would come across and double up just to help me in a one v one situations, same on the other side. Shaun again and the attacking lads, what they did in the defensive aspect was key for us today. Everybody stuck to their job in the second half and arguably probably one of the best team performances we’ve had this year.”

Town have an impressive clean sheet record with 7 in 14 games. “It is impressive, and I know the manager has been focusing on us being difficult to beat. We have some warriors at the back, we’ve got good defenders. We’re hard to break down as we’re a solid unit when we get things right and we’ve done a lot of work on that, we’ve probably done more work on that than the attacking aspect as it was key to give us that foundation to build on.”

“We’re still actually working on our attacking game and being more fluid, especially when we come up against teams that sit in and we need to break them down. We found it a little bit difficult to do that because we’ve focused so much on priding ourselves and being solid and difficult to beat. But we showed that again today, showed that last couple of games we don’t concede many goals which gives us a chance cause then we’re always in the game.” Scott talked about how hard Town have been working on defending and being solid as a unit along the back-line.
