Striker looking to get back among the goals
Striker Scott Vernon wants to get back among the goals for Shrewsbury Town – starting at Stevenage on Saturday.The 30-year-old, signed this summer by manager Micky Mellon, has been left frustrated in front of the target recently.
He scored the winner in the 1-0 victory over Blackpool in the Capital One Cup First Round but has had little luck hitting the net ever since.
However, the former Aberdeen marksman believes he can get back on the goal trail in no time.
“I’m going to keep going out there with it in mind that I’m looking for goals all the time,” said Vernon.
“In pre-season I was scoring regularly, so hopefully I can get back on that goal trail soon enough.
“It’s still early days in the season. I’m always wanting and expecting to score.
“In the last home game (against Luton), how the ball never went in from me I’ll never know.
“It was just one of those days. Then we had a tough away trip to Hartlepool where we didn’t play well.
“I’m always just trying to score to help the team.
“It’s a good camaraderie (with the strikers). We all want good for each other but we’ve all got a selfish streak as well.
“You have to have that as a striker. We all want to be playing and scoring goals. Ultimately, though, if one of our mates is in a better position to score a goal, I feel the best thing to do is to give it to them to score.
“It’s a team thing, not a selfish thing.”
Vernon has enjoyed having a full week’s training in the build-up to the game at the Lamex Stadium, with no Tuesday night fixture getting in the way.
“It’s felt quite nice actually (having no Tuesday game) because it’s been a busy period for us before that,” he said.
“It’s heavy on the body, physically and mentally.”
The 6ft 1in forward is expecting a difficult test against Graham Westley’s Stevenage on Saturday, however.
“We’re expecting a tough game. They’re going to be physical, that’s the main thing,” said Vernon.
“They’re going to try and make the game physical, probably knowing how we like to play as well, so we’ve got to be ready for that battle.
“We’re capable of going there and getting a win, we know that. It’s just about doing it on the day and turning up in the right frame of mind.”
