Town manager reflects on defeat at Stevenage
Manager Micky Mellon insists Shrewsbury Town just need to start finishing their chances following the 1-0 defeat at Stevenage on Saturday.Darius Charles' goal for the hosts settled a contest which Town, in truth, should have came away from with at least a point.
There were plenty of opportunites for Micky's side to at least force a point, with Jermaine Grandison's header against the crossbar being the closest.
And Micky believes the finishing touch is all Town need to add to their game at the moment.
“If you don’t take your chances, and we had a lot, then we are going to find it very difficult," said Micky.
“Apart from not taking their chances I have got to be pleased with what the players did. We kept going and we kept creating those chances.
“We never got frustrated with their gamesmanship which we knew was going to happen so full credit to the boys - the only thing that missing today was the goal.”
“I’ll be concerned if we don’t create chances. I know we have got good strikers and eventually we will give someone a right good beating.
“We created chance after chance we just couldn’t get that little bit of fortune that would have turned the game in our favour.”
Micy threw on striker Scott Vernon in search of the equaliser, meaning Town had four forwards on the pitch - Vernon, Andy Mangan, James Collins and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro
And it's something the Town manager revealed he had tried in training.
“We have to try and win every game. We had four strikers on at the end and they can play in those positions,” said Micky.
“It’s not a gung-ho thing it’s something that we work on and practice. But on the day we just couldn’t get the goal.”
“Apart from that I have got to say that we are pleased to come here and play the way we did.
“We showed the battling qualities that I know we have I am just frustrated we didn’t get the goals we deserved.
“They have come out and fought for every ball. They have got it down and played and got it into dangerous areas. We just needed that bit of magic to do the most important thing in football – put it in the net.
“Anyone here today that has a half decent football brain on them will know that Shrewsbury are a very, very good side. There are no concerns from me we just have to put away our chances.”
