A5 Roadworks Suspended For Evening Games

13 August 2014

Work on Emestry and Preston Boats islands won't happen during evening Town games

The Highways Agency has reassured Shrewsbury Town and visiting fans that its roadworks on the Emstrey and Preston Boats islands on the A5 will not impede traffic leaving forthcoming evening games.

For matches with a 7.45pm kick off, overnight traffic management will not be put in place on the roundabouts until around an hour after the final whistle, meaning traffic leaving the stadium can get home more easily.

The games concerned are:
•    Tues 19 August vs Accrington Stanley
•    Tues 16 September vs Carlisle United
•    Tues 21 October vs Bury

The Highways Agency scheme will improve the layout of both islands and traffic lights will be installed to ease congestion especially at peak times.

The project is part of the Government’s pinch point programme. Work at Preston Boats junction will retain the existing roundabout and signalise all approaches. These will be ‘smart’ signals that read the demands of traffic on the junction approaches and alter timings automatically. The signalisation will introduce ‘free flow’ lanes on the A5 westbound and A49 to A5 eastbound arms, removing a significant volume of traffic from the junction. Emstrey island will benefit from several approaches being widened and widening of the island itself to provide three lanes with traffic lights.
