Tamika Mkandawire keen to focus on Christmas fixtures after Walsall frustration

Skipper Tamika Mkandawire has called for calm heads heading into an important run of fixtures despite Town’s lacklustre performance in the 1-0 defeat to Walsall.

Town had chances to make the breakthrough, and to level, but it wasn’t GT’s team’s day in the gale force conditions at Greenhous Meadow.

“It was frustrating, obviously,” said Mkandawire.

“If you look at the chances we created early on then possibly if we’d have taken one it could’ve been different.

“We knew how they were going to play having played them already this season. I think we weren’t great by any means, but we stayed in the game for a long period and if we’d of taken our chances it might have been a different outcome.

“It was quite hard to play your passes because of the wind, and then sun as well, but that’s no excuse – we were poor all over.”

The Club captain was pleased with the chances Town created and suggested that the team should take that as a positive heading forward.

“We’ve got to take anything we can from it. We created a lot of chances and hopefully in the games that are going to be played over Christmas, the luck will be on our side and we can find the back of the net.”

Town travel to Crewe on Saturday before a Christmas bonanza of fixtures with Tranmere visiting the GM on Boxing Day and Preston just a few days later – fixtures Mkandawire insists are key.

“We’ll start work again next week in training and we’ll work hard. We’ll be confident of going to Crewe and getting something out of the game, having got our first away win against Stevenage. That will give us the drive to go and perform again away from home.

“It’s a game we’ll look forward to. We need a result there, and we fully believe we can get that.

“Christmas is an important period for any club. We’ve got to pick up the results and make the most of our home games.”
