New arrival hoping to get chance with Town

Gozie Ugwu is raring to get started after joining Shrewsbury Town on a youth loan from Reading until January 2.

The 20-year-old striker trained with his new team mates at Lilleshall this morning and hopes to figure for Town in Saturday's local derby at Port Vale.

"I always hope to start really, but if it means coming on and making an impact then I'll be prepared to do that," said Oxford-born Ugwu, who has been handed the number seven shirt.

Ugwu is aware that manager Graham Turner had been after him for some time, reflecting: "I know he watched my first under-21 game of the season against Newcastle in which I scored two so I did well in that game"

He describes himself as a "quick, powerful, pacy forward" and believes his loan spells in the Football League with Yeovil and Plymouth last season will help him settle in at the Greenhous Meadow.

"I scored a couple of goals on loan for Yeovil last season and then went to Plymouth but it was a bit of a frustrating time with injuries," said Ugwu.

"But I'm fighting fit now and hopefully I'll keep scoring goals."

Ugwu has spoken to Reading team mate Michael Hector, who had a loan spell at the Meadow last season, about Shrewsbury and was pleased to hear good things.

"I know bits about the club as I spoke to Michael before I came here," he added. "He spoke very highly of the club."
