Mickey Demetriou:"I couldn't have asked for anything more"

All that was missing for Mickey was a cleansheet

Matchwinner Mickey Demetriou is targeting a sustained run in the Shrewsbury Town team, after crowning a dream Football League debut with the winning goal against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

With Town trailing 1-0 going into second half stoppage time, the defender's cross was converted by substitute Andy Mangan for the equaliser, and the two combined again soon after with Demetriou heading in to snatch a dramatic and unlikely win.

"I couldn't be happier," said the left-back, who turned down a new contract at non-league Kidderminster to sign for Shrewsbury in the summer.

"I couldn't have asked for anything more, although as a defender, a clean sheet would have been nice.  I thought we deserved it, we stuck to our game plan. They tried to block us out for 90 minutes, they got the lead and they did well. Fortunately for us, it fell apart in the last few minutes. The dressing room was bouncing at the end, and to help the team get three important points at the start of the season is a big thing for me."

His goal sparked pandemonium at the Greenhous Meadow, and earned a first league win for manager Micky Mellon after the League Cup success against Championship side Blackpool four days earlier.

"I'm not sure how I got to the ball to be honest as it felt like my legs were falling off," joked Demetriou. "Mangs had it, he saw me peel off to the back post and he put a worldie for me on a plate. It was easier to score than miss. Jean Louis Akpra Akpro, against his former club, was a massive handful when he came on. He ducked out of the way of the cross after I gave him a shout, so if he hadn't have heard me, we wouldn't be celebrating the win."

Now Demetriou is targeting a run of games in the Shrewsbury side after being left out of the squad for the opening two matches. He got his chance against Tranmere after defender Mark Ellis picked up a knee injury against Blackpool, and scans have confirmed he's likely to be out for around five weeks.

"It's unfortunate for Mark getting injured but it's given me my chance and I'll be looking to take it," he said. "I've done it before at Kidderminster when I first went there.  I had to sit it out for two months and went on to play more than 100 games. If I do that here, I'll be buzzing."

Attention now turns to Tuesday night's home match against Accrington Stanley, and Demetriou is expecting a similar sort of test against a side who haven't registered a point from their opening matches.

"The gaffer has already said that Accrington will do something similar to Tranmere," he said. "They might not, but from the matches they've watched it looks like they might be defensive.

It's a game plan we're probably going to have to get used to as the season goes on, especially at home. We may have to do the same ourselves in away games.  We will have to play around it. We could have just stopped and taken a point after the first goal but we went onto get the second and that shows the team spirit within the group is brilliant."
