Midweek results mean Town are nearly over the line
Graham Turner admitted it was a relief that Shrewsbury Town are now on the brink of making sure of their League One future.
While Town still mathematically require a point to definitely guarantee safety, it would need a major swing on goal difference to be caught by fourth-bottom Scunthorpe.
"With the way the results went on Tuesday it would have to be an absolute disaster for us to go down," said GT. "There would have to be a 19 goal change in goal difference.
"We're six points clear of Scunthorpe who have two games left and it's only goal difference now that can change it so we're almost home and dry."
GT was pleased results elsewhere went Town's way in midweek including at Colchester where he was in the crowd to watch Saturday's opponents lose at home to MK Dons.
"I thought Colchester did quite well," he added. "I went down to watch them play MK Dons and at times they were a bit unfortunate.
"They hit the woodwork, they had one or two chances, although MK Dons finally ran out 2-0 winners.
"It was an interesting match in as much that at half time I went into the lounge there and saw the scores with Scunthorpe winning at Bury, Oldham also winning and Colchester were doing okay against MK Dons although they were a goal down.
"One of the stewards said to me that results aren't going our way and we need a change of fortune.
"He came running up not long after saying Bury had equalised. Then the crowd erupted chanting 'Bury' and 'The U's are staying up' so it was obvious that Bury had gone 2-1 up.
"That has made a massive difference, surprisingly after Bury's relegation last weekend, and it was a very pleasant piece of news.
"I've got to say the atmosphere at Colchester, the supporters were really behind them despite the fact they were losing 1-0 and then 2-0.
"It was a great atmosphere when they started chanting 'The U's are staying up'. I was impressed with the support they've got and it's going to be a family day on Saturday against us so I would imagine there would be a strng support for them and a good atmosphere.
"I'm rather pleased we're in the position we're in now."
