Captain's thoughts on the Gills draw
Shrewsbury Town extended their unbeaten run in the league to four games on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Gillingham.Alex Rodman’s second half strike ensured Town came away from the MEMS Priestfield Stadium with a point.
Abu Ogogo continued to captain the side in Adam El-Abd’s absence and he spoke to the press after the match.
“It was a hard earned point,” he said.
“In the first half we weren’t really at it and the gaffer let us know that. But we came out in the second half and improved.
“The main thing was to make sure we got something from the game and we did that – and we even could have nicked it at the end but we’ll take the point.
“There was lots of chances – both teams were really trying to win. But I think at the end of it a draw was a fair result.”
Travelling to Gillingham following back-to-back home wins Town were full of confidence but in the first half the team struggled to get going at times and fell behind on the stroke of half time as Deji Oshilaja put the home side in front.
“I think in the past we could have folded but we never gave up and we showed good character to get back in the game.
“I think the gaffer’s instilled belief in the players – we said at half time if we just keep it at one – we’ll get a chance and that happened.
Rodman scored his first goal for Town today, but he could have had two as he saw an earlier chance strike the post.
“It shows his character – he could have gone the other way and gone into his shell and he knows he should’ve scored that one but he’s popped up with the equaliser so I’m happy for him.”
Ogogo was full of praise for Rodman and the other new additions to the squad who have made a positive impact.
“We needed the lift that new players bring – competitions’ good – it keeps you on your toes.
“They’re all good players – so it’s good to know that if you’re having an off day the gaffer can put them in and you know they’re going to do a good job.
“We’ve got a lot of options up top now – which gives the gaffer a nice headache. As long as we keep creating chances there’s no reason to be concerned – we just need to make sure when the chances come that we stick them away.”
