King becomes Under-18s Technical Coach

Shrewsbury Town Academy Coach Ben King has been given greater responsibility after staff changes in the department.

Town have appointed three new faces, whilst King and Callum McKenzie have seen their roles change under the new structure.

Ben will continue to lead the club’s younger age groups as the Lead Foundation Phase Coach, but will now also assist with technical aspects of the Under 18s work.

Ben is looking forward to be working with the Under 18s on a more regular basis.

“I’m really excited to be working with the Under 18s”, King told ShrewsWeb.

“Over the last few months I have been heavily involved with them anyway with the Reserves and Youth Team games and with new staff coming in it’s nice to still have that responsibility of working as a technical coach with them.

“I will be focussing on the technical aspects of the players. For example, we have a right midfielder that is very good at beating players, but he just struggles with the delivery.

“So, in training sessions I will break it down and focus on that delivery, how he delivers it, where he delivers it too and what the pace is on the ball.

“I will focus on those points so that he gets lots of repetition, for the hope that he will then work on that and take it into the games.

Ben joined the club back in September 2015 and is now looking forward to testing himself across the age groups.

“It’s going to be interesting going from coaching the Under 8s to the Under 18s in one day”, said Ben.

“But, it pushes you as a coach in different directions and different ways and gets you to think about how you can adapt your coaching style for those kind of players.

“I’m really happy to be given this position. I was here before Andy Jones came into the club and he’s been really positive in what he’s done with the Academy.

“Over the last few months we have started moving in the right direction. It has been a slow process, but we are really happy with what is going on.”
