Danny's thoughts after the home defeat to Sheffield United
Town temporary manager Danny Coyne was disappointed as he spoke to the press after another defeat at the Greenhous Meadow. A 3-0 defeat at home to Sheffield United didn’t flatter the away side and Shrewsbury’s wretched run of form that stretches back to last August shows no sign of abating.“The first half was a bit of a non-event I think, it was just two teams tussling and there were few chances at both ends,” said Coyne. “But they came out second half and had a couple of shots early doors and then he (Billy Sharp) goes and puts it in the top corner. We tried to stick with what we were doing but it was a tough situation with them getting on top in the second half. Any chances we had in the box, the shots were getting blocked or the keeper was making saves. At the other end, they were getting the rub of the green and things were falling for them but there’s only us that can turn this around and I’ve just said that to the lads. We have to stick together no matter what and stop goals from going in at what end, and obviously scoring at the other. The lads are giving it everything they can at the minute and I don’t want to sound like a broken record but things aren’t going our way and we have to change that.”
Coyne has made no secret of the fact that he has no desire to be considered for the vacant post at the GM but wants the current situation resolving ASAP: “The lads want stability where a manager is in charge and looks after things. Everybody at the club has been trying to sort that out and it’s ongoing. It’s all about passion this game and we have to keep giving it our all every game no matter what. That’s always been my philosophy even as a player because I can’t stand losing. If you get knocked down you have to get back up otherwise you might as well pack it all in. The position that I’m in is my responsibility and I know that and I’ve been doing the best I can to get the lads together and organised.”
Talks are still ongoing with Coyne likely to remain in charge unless an appointment is made in time for the Northampton game at home this Saturday. If that happens, Coyne expects to have talks with the new man. But he was asked if he’d enjoyed his brief tenure in charge, despite the results. “It’s hard to judge it when you say despite the results. I’ve enjoyed doing it to be honest but it’s horrible when you’re stood out there and your teams getting beat 3-0 at home. It hurts like mad and you struggle to put it into words sometimes. But you get up, you move on and that’s all that you can do. I hope the supporters stick with us but I know it’s a very frustrating time for them. They’re paying their money to come and watch us every week and the results haven’t gone our way. They’re perfectly entitled to have their say and I fully understand that. If we can get them behind the players, that’s all we ask of them.”
