Dom Smith joins Barrow

19 August 2016

Smith heads to Holker Street

Shrewsbury Town defender Dom Smith has joined Vanarama National League side Barrow on loan.

20 year old Dom, played 21 league games last season, helping Town to League One safety.

Dom spent the 2014/15 season out on loan at Tamworth in the Vanarama National League North. A move which proved very successful.

Shrewsbury born Smith has also played for Wales under 21s in recent years and it is hoped that the move will allow him to get out and play games on a regular basis.

Manager Micky Mellon is hoping it will help continue his development.

"The stage that Dom's at in his career we want to keep letting him play football at a a competitive level and keep improving," said Micky.

"Learn the nuts and bolts of his profession, which is at centre back. Learn about that playing against good sides every week and I think the ideal place for him to do that is at Barrow. So he'll go there and no doubt improve.

"If we don't think there is an immediate opportunity for the young lads to be here, then we'll look to keep their pathway going forward.

"We wanted a challenging environment that would keep moving Dom forward and the Conference Premier is certainly that because he will get tested every week in a very competitive league and it will improve Dom no end for Shrewsbury Town."
