EFL Trophy Draw

Town get Middlesbrough, Scunthorpe and Cambridge

The draw for the new format EFL Trophy has taken place and Town have been handed some interesting games against Middlesbrough, Scunthorpe and Cambridge United.

This year teams with Category One U23 sides have been invited to enter the competition and boost the number of teams.  The competition will also see sides play in groups of four teams giving each side at least three games in the EFL Trophy.

Town are in Northern Group G and the games have been arranged for the following weeks:-

Northern Group G

Match Day 1 – w/c 29th August 2016
Scunthorpe United v Middlesbrough
Shrewsbury Town v Cambridge United

Match Day 2 – w/c 3rd October 2016
Cambridge United v Middlesbrough
Scunthorpe United v Shrewsbury Town

Match Day 3 – w/c 7th November 2016
Cambridge United v Scunthorpe United
Middlesbrough v Shrewsbury Town

Town manager Micky Mellon is taking the competition seriously with a possible final at Wembley Stadium.

“We’ve been drawn against three good clubs and those games should be a good test for us”, said Micky.

“It will be nice to play a Premier League club in Middlesbrough and should be good experience for our younger players.

“It’s an important competition and one that we will do our best to progress as far as we can in.”
