Shrewsbury Town in the Community's February Soccer Schools are a great success
Shrewsbury Town in the Community hosted the latest round of soccer schools over the February half term – and it was just as fun as ever!In total we had 148 children sign up over the four day sessions taking place on the Powerleague pitches at Greenhous Meadow, which were action packed from day one!
Lenny the Lion got things underway and welcomed participants to the pitches, before they were sorted into groups and led by our coaches Alex, Bryn and Dale.
Our FA Cup competition followed, where FC Halifax defeated Barrow to take the crown!
The teams were aided by a special visit, from Shrewsbury Town’s Freddie Ladapo!
Freddie brought his goalscoring form onto the Powerleague, and it doesn’t seem to matter where the goals are scored – he can’t help but dance!
The bar was set high for day two, and it didn’t disappoint!
This time Shaun Whalley and Junior Brown got in on the action, and showed some great teamwork to set up plenty of goals over the afternoon.
Day three saw a dodge ball tournament take place, as well as the skills challenge where the stars were Owen, Tia and Henry! They now get the chance to play on the pitch at Greenhous Meadow on 4th March, where at half time of the game against Coventry they will take on the finalists from our Ludlow Soccer Schools!
The final day saw Storm Doris ride into town, but that didn’t stop us from having fun! We headed into the Hub to hide from the stormy weather, where the coaches hosted a variety of games, including a FIFA tournament with Town players Louis Dodds and AJ Leitch-Smith!
Ryan McGivern also stopped by, and took on some of our players with a few games of table tennis!
Eventually the weather subsided, and we concluded the week with our Champions League Tournament, which saw the Classic XI overcome runners up Barcelona!
Looking back on the week’s events, one of the highlights had been the appearance from Town striker Freddie, who was happy to have met the participants on day one.
“They were lovely, actually,” he said. “They were all hyperactive and enjoying themselves, they all wanted me to be on their team to get that little advantage!
“But it was great being with them.
“I think it’s important that we all spread ourselves (around the community) as much as possible, not only to the kids but people in hospitals and everything you can for appearances, its good to share yourselves with the fans.”
Freddie seemed to have enjoyed the afternoon as much as the players, if not more! He admitted to having a lot of fun, and added: “There were a few [trademark] celebrations everywhere! I mean everyone wants to see it now, it’s become a bit of a thing. Long may it continue!
“I was just getting the kids to try and move, and enjoy their celebration after they scored. They were all enjoying it!
“It’s a good way to grow up, having fun with your friends.”
Next up is our Easter Soccer Schools, where you will get the chance to take part in a stadium Easter egg hunt, our Footgolf Tournament, and you will even have the chance to play on the Greenhous Meadow pitch!
