Shrewsbury hold a slender historical edge in the fixture having won 21 of the 50 matches between the sides, while Northampton have won 20 of the ties, and there have been nine draws.The last match between the sides was Micky Mellon’s last in charge at the Greenhous Meadow as Northampton beat Town 4-2 at home.
Gabriel Zakuani took the lead for the visitors in the 36th minute, before Paul Anderson doubled their lead on the half hour mark. Ivan Toney pulled one back for Town from the spot before the break.
But Sam Hoskins restored their two-goal cushion, and then Anderson scored again to make it 4-1. Toney bagged from the spot again in injury time to restore some parity but ultimately it was too little too late.
Prior to this season the sides last met in the 2014/15 season when they were both in League Two.
Northampton won the second match between the sides 2-1 at the Greenhous Meadow.
Chris Hackett and Joel Byrom either side of the break to give the Cobblers a 2-0 lead, before Micky Demetriou pulled one back for Salop with six minutes left on the clock.
In the first match of the season between the sides Shrewsbury were denied all three points in the closing moments at Sixfields.
Collins had given Salop the lead in the 63rd minute, only for Emile Sinclair to equalise in the 90th minute to earn his side a point.
The sides also met twice in League Two in the 2011/12 season.
In the second tie between the teams – they played out a 1-1 draw at the Greenhous Meadow.
A young Saido Berahino opened the scoring for the Cobblers before Matt Richards struck back for Town in the 34th minute.
Earlier in that season however Salop earnt three points in a hugely memorable nine-goal thriller at Sixfields.
Mark Wright struck twice and Terry Gornell added a third after 44 minutes to give Town a 3-0 half time lead.
Ben Tozer netted in the 49th minute for the Cobblers, before Marvin Morgan restored Town’s three goal lead with eight minutes left.
Adebayo Akinfenwa scored in the 85th to pull one back before Salop ran riot in the closing stages as James Collins, Joe Jacobsen and a Kevin Langmead own-goal meant Town ended up winning 7-2.
