Scunthorpe holds the historical edge in this fixture having won 18 of the previous 42 matches, to Shrewsbury’s 12 wins, while there have been 12 draws.The sides have already met twice this season, the most recent match coming back in October in the Checkatrade Trophy.
On this occasion Scunthorpe came out on top, running out 2-0 winners at Glanford Park thanks to a Jonathon Margate strike and an Olly Lancashire own-goal.
While earlier in the season, in September, Scunthorpe again came out on top beating Town 1-0 at the Greenhous Meadow.
David Mirfin headed home in first half injury time to give the Iron all three points, after Olly Lancashire had earlier had a chance cleared off the line.
The sides met twice in League One in the 2015/16 season as well – the second of those encounters ending in an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Greenhous Meadow.
A Sullay Kaikai strike gave Town the lead at half time, but after goals from Paddy Madden and Kyle Wootton, a 95th minute equaliser was needed from Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro to rescue a point.
Earlier in that season, in October 2015, Town succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Glanford Park.
Sullay Kaikai netted for Town once again to open the scoring, but a tidy finish from Scott Laird and a Paddy Madden penalty gave Scunthorpe the win.
The sides also met in League One in the 2012/13 season, the second match ending in a drab 0-0 draw at Glanford Park, in a season which eventually saw the Iron relegated.
