Jack talks to press about his loan move and the match with Oldham
Jack Grimmer was pleased to have joined Shrewsbury Town on loan from Fulham for his third stint at the Shropshire side. Despite attracting interest from a host of clubs Grimmer is adamant it was an easy decision for him to choose Shrewsbury:“It feels a bit like déjà vu being back but I am really looking forward to the challenge. Shrewsbury contacted me and as soon as I heard about it I jumped at the chance. When Micky made the call I was his man. There is probably only about four or five lads here now from last season, it is a completely new bunch of players but they are all hungry and want to win. That is why I thought it was a good idea to come here, I had other options but when they came knocking they were the team.”
The 22-year-old feels it will be difficult to break into the starting 11 which he believes is filled with quality:
“I just want to play as many games as possible. That won’t be easy because it is really competitive group and the standard has been raised. I just want to get my head down and hit the form that I did last season. I am not expecting to come here and just be in the team. I just have to work hard first and hopefully be given a chance. I have been really lucky the last two times I have been here to have played every time I have been available but that might not be the case this time because it is really competitive.”
“That is why I am surprised with the start they have had to the season. But teams can start slow and then start picking up points so hopefully I can help them to kick on. I am sure we can pick up results if we tweak a couple of things and us as a team can get higher up the league.”
Grimmer admits one of the key reasons for signing for the club again was his relationship with the fans and he is excited about performing in front of them again this season:
“It is a pity it isn’t a home game to start me off but I will definitely be thanking them for the support and hopefully I can show them again what I can do and repay their support with good performances. I get on with everyone at the club and the relationship I have with the fans was one of the biggest things. The reaction I got on social media when they heard that I had signed again was incredible and I couldn’t ask for better support and I am very grateful. It is a long time to wait until the home game but I am really looking forward to running out here again. Hopefully it goes better than my first home game here last season when we lost 3-0 to Barnsley! I am looking forward to getting out there again and getting into the thick of things.”
Shrewsbury travel to Oldham in their next match on Saturday and the former Aberdeen player is confident of getting a result:
“I know a few of the players at Oldham so I am really looking forward to the game. There is a player on loan there from Fulham who is a centre back so I am hoping to put three past him. The more we can score the happier we will be. But I think it will be a tough test. They had a tough game in the week in the cup so hopefully there is weaknesses there that we can exploit and we can go and get the win.”
The former Scotland under 21 International praised Micky Mellon and feels he is a big factor in the club being able to sign the talent that they have:
“I am a big fan of Micky and the way he manages his teams. His man management skills are a big factor in the players that he gets at the club. He said himself that the squad is more League 1 ready this year and although that hasn’t shown yet I feel that with the quality they have brought in. it is a testament to him and his backroom staff with the players he can bring in.”
