Collo and club reach mutual agreement
Shrewsbury Town can confirm that striker James Collins has left the club after it was mutually agreed that his contract would be cancelled.The 25 year old returned to Town in the summer of 2014 and his goals helped the club to secure promotion to the Sky Bet League 1. Last season he scored 7 times for Town but spent the second half of the season on loan at Northampton Town, earning himself another promotion medal helping the Cobblers into League 1.
Collo now ends his second spell with Shrewsbury Town having joined the club from Aston Villa in 2011. His goals during that season were vital in helping Town to gain their first promotion to League 1 in a long time.
Town manager Micky Mellon was full of praise for Collo and wished him well in his next challenge.
“First and foremost I would like to thank him for his efforts and contributions in the two years that I have been at the club”, said Micky.
“He’s done everything I’ve always asked of him but in football as things evolve then people move on.
“He goes with our absolute best wishes and I am certainly very grateful for the part that he has played in getting us to the stage we are at now.”
Collo scored 17 times in his first season back with Town and his goals helped Micky Mellon’s new look side win promotion at the first time of asking.
“Without a shadow of a doubt he helped in our promotion and he was a big character both on and off the pitch”, said Micky.
“He’s been a huge part of what we have achieved but as squads evolve people move on as we try to move things forward.”
The Town manager put his trust in Collo by giving him the captain’s armband at times, a sign of the player’s character.
“I have to say he’s a lad who I get on very well with and he has continued to show that character for us”, added Micky.
“There is a new challenge for him wherever he goes and I am sure he will show the same character and achievement in his next club.
“He goes with our very best wishes and I am sure our paths will cross again in the future.”
Collo’s departure means the manager will now be looking to strengthen his forward line.
“James departure means we are a bit light on numbers up front so we will try and improve the group the best we can”, said Micky.
“There are some things we want to try and get done and hopefully we will have the opportunity to do that shortly.
“The backing I have always got from the chairman has been great and we know what type of players we want to get into the group to help it move forward.”
