Jayson looks ahead to the trip to Gillingham
Shrewsbury Town Goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler is searching for his third straight clean sheet when Town take on Gillingham on Saturday.Leutwiler has been part of the side which has had back to back 1-0 wins over Bradford and Oldham.
Jayson made his 100th League appearance for Town against Oldham and he admits to being proud of what he has achieved at Shrewsbury.
“I am very proud”, Jayson told the Press.
“It’s taken two and a half years to get to 100 league appearances and it’s a very nice moment for me. The club has changed completely. There’s a different manager, different players. It’s only myself, Mark Halstead and Callum Burton who are still here from the first day, so it’s changed a lot.
“With the training ground hopefully ready soon and with the new Gaffer everything has moved forward and in the right direction. I’m probably the one with the most games now in the team, but it’s on the pitch that counts and how many games you’ve played doesn’t really count for anything.”
Leutwiler has been part of a defensive unit which has kept eight clean sheets since Paul Hurst has come to the club and he has been impressed with Town’s form at the back.
“Toto’s been great”, said Leutwiler.
“The games he has played have been very good. He’s very strong, defends well, that’s what we needed and along with Adam El-Abd they are very good together.
“We’re giving the other teams less chances which is a good sign. Defence, midfield and strikers have their part to play in that and it’s pleasing for me because it’s always better when you have a quiet game, as it means it works well in front of you which is good.
“I’m pleased with my form. It’s always a good result when you don’t concede, but we have to work hard because if we don’t all reach our level we could lose a game very easily and how many goals you concede could be crucial at the end of the season.”
Saturday’s game with Gillingham sees Town take on another team around them in the league and Jayson believes it will be a tough test, but one Town can win.
“We’re going to go there for a win”, said Jayson
“It’s going to be very tough, Gillingham need the win also, so it’s going to be a tough game and we are going to give everything and try to get something there.
“You’ve got to go there with a calm attitude and not panicking. You really have to concentrate there and everyone is going to give everything. The most important thing is to not have any regrets, give everything and the results will come.
“They probably have more to lose than us to be honest because they know if they lose they are back in, whereas for us if we win we are back up and in those situations I think it’s always better to be our situation.
“The confidence is high and it’s always good to win games, but it’s a tough game on Saturday and that is the real test.”
