Supporters travel from far and wide to support Town
For so many football fans, nothing can ever beat the feeling of going to watch your team play all over the country.No matter how many hours are spent on the road, or how much it costs, supporting a football club is often a lifelong commitment.
That is the case for Mike Schorah, who travels far and wide to support the club he has followed for over 50 years.
Mike is originally from the town, but now lives in Felixstowe, Suffolk, and he was a special guest of The Shrewsbury Club for Saturday’s game vs. Bristol Rovers.
Mike admitted that despite the distance, supporting Town is just not something that he can give up.
“I’m a regular away fan, I travel to about half of the away games a season, and I get down to Greenhous Meadow about half a dozen times a season.
“They’re fairly long trips! About 220 miles to get here and then back again at night, so it’s a long day. But I love it.
“I can’t give it up, it’s in the blood.”
Whilst we were speaking to Mike, The Beatles’ classic Hey Jude played over the sound system, which evoked particular memories for the lifelong fan.
“We remember it from the famous night we were playing MK Dons at the National Hockey Stadium in the semi final of the play-offs.
“This particular song was played at half time and it galvanized the Shrewsbury fans to give the team a massive support in the second half and we won the game 2-1, against all the odds. It resonates very much.”
“We had a famous victory, which led to a famous day at Wembley when we played Bristol Rovers. Unfortunately we lost the final 3-1 but it was a great day.”
From what he has seen over the last few weeks, Mike remains optimistic for the future despite a difficult start to the season for the club.
“We’ve got great team spirit and we played ever so well at Millwall last Saturday, they dug out a great victory, so I’m really hopeful for the rest of the season.
“Paul Hurst is really changing things around for the better, and you can see the togetherness and the spirit in the team.”
