Goalscorers thoughts after the win over Charlton
Shrewsbury Town made it five wins in a row at home as they came out on top in a thriller – beating Charlton Athletic 4-3.
A Louis Dodds brace and goals from Tyler Roberts and Shaun Whalley gave Town all three points in a topsy-turvy game which saw Ricky Holmes bag a hattrick for the visitors.
It was Dodds first start for Salop in over a month as he returned from injury and he repaid Paul Hurst’s faith by scoring the winner – he spoke to the press after the match.
“It was a great victory – one where if we were on Match of the Day - I think we’d be on first,” he said.
“It was a strange one – at half time we had a little word with ourselves and we likened it to a basketball game – and that carried on in the second half too.
“There were quite a few good goals - I don’t think I’ve played against someone who’s got that good a hattrick in a game – and obviously I’m happy with my two goals as well.”
Dodds also spoke about what a rollercoaster of a game it was as he saw Town initially go ahead before being pegged back and having to take the lead again.
“It’s strange because you’re really happy and then they get one back and go in front,” he smiled.
“Sometimes it was hard to get your breath and I was struggling a bit at times because it was my first game back in a while.
“But obviously now I can sit back and say it was a good game and I was glad to be a part of it - it was a great spectacle and I’m glad we came out on top.”
Dodds struck his eighth and ninth goals of the season, meaning he is now Town’s top scorer, though Dodds admitted that he would not be resting on his laurels.
“I want to get into double figures and achieve my targets,” he added.
“It’s been frustrating being out of the team – I came out with an injury and then Tyler and Freddie hit a good patch of form – so I had to bide my time and be patient – so today I came back in and repaid the gaffer’s faith.”
Salop now have not lost at home since the turn of the year, when Fleetwood came away with all three points, meaning Town have won five on the bounce since then – a record Dodds is keen to continue against Coventry on Saturday.
“We’ve got another home game on Saturday and we want to make it six and get as many points as quick as possible.”
