The Gaffer looks ahead to the visit of Chesterfield
Micky Mellon is expecting his side to bounce back from the disappointment of Charlton, when they take on Chesterfield on Saturday.Shrewsbury are still looking for their first league win of the season.
Individual errors cost Town as they went down 3-0 on Tuesday night, but the Gaffer is hoping to put the mistakes behind them and move forward.
“You’ve got to take what you can from the games, both good and bad, and keep trying to move it forward,” Micky told ShrewsWeb.
“I think the best way of explaining it is they are human beings, not machines. They make mistakes, they make errors and it’s part and parcel of football.
“You don’t know when they’re going to happen, but they do. Sometimes that’s the way it goes. We put on a training session this morning and they try and recreate those goals again and probably out of 100 times they wouldn’t score them again.
“It’s about moving it on now and admitting that we need to get better at certain stuff, but also admitting that we played some good decent football and worked the overloads well and got ourselves into some good positions.”
Micky was disappointed to lose at Charlton, but thinks his side aren’t far away from finding the winning formula.
“Playing well, scoring goals, builds confidence, but within that you’ve got to do the basics. Doing the basics well gives you loads of confidence and you can grow a performance from that.
“So, we will be looking to continue with that, because so far this season the performances have been fine, against a lot of the fancied teams.
“I’m not going to sit here and say we’re going to put the white flag up and expect to get beat. No way am I ever going to be like that. But, we feel that the performances within these games, if we cut out the individual errors, we could have been in a different position at the minute.”
Ched Evans will lead the line for The Spireites, who currently sit second in the League One table. Micky is well aware of the threat he, and the rest of the Chesterfield side pose.
“He’s a terrific footballer,” said Micky.
“Look at the goals that he’s scored. They’ve played four games and he’s got four goals, so it’s a terrific tally for them. We know the threats that he has and we know that again we have to be very good because they’ve got a good frontman.
“They’ve got a goalscorer scoring goals, so that’s what it’s all about isn’t it. Putting the ball in the back of the net and stopping it going into yours. It’s as simple as that.
“So, we need to try and do more of that. We’re working hard in order to try and create more chances and score more goals. We also know at the other end we’ve got to be more ruthless.
“We know it will be a difficult game. They’re a good side, we’ve watched a lot of footage of them. So, we know the threats that they have. I know Danny Wilson very well, I worked with Danny. So, I know it will be a tough game.
“They’re finding a winning formula at the minute, they’ve got a goalscorer. So, it’s something that we’re all trying to get towards and indeed Chesterfield will be trying to keep it that way,” added Micky.
Micky also confirmed that striker AJ Leitch-Smith would be back for Chesterfield, after he missed the last two games with a hamstring injury.
“He’s trained today, so he’s fine. It’s his first training day for 9 or 10 days, so we will see if there is any fallout from that, but, I’m not expecting anything.
“He will defiantly be in contention, because he’s important to us and he will definitely be in contention to be in with the rest of the lads.”
