Micky talks to the press ahead of the visit of Gillingham
Micky Mellon is looking forward to getting back to the Greenhous Meadow to face Gillingham, after a tough loss at Sunderland on Wednesday night.Town performed admirably at the Stadium of Light, but were beaten by a late Adnan Januzai strike.
The Gaffer was pleased with the performance at Sunderland and is hoping to keep moving things forward ahead of the visit Gillingham.
“There’s obviously things in the game that we would like to get better at, there always is, but there was certainly a lot that we got right on the night,” Micky told the Press.
“But, that’s what it’s all about. It’s about continual improvement and moving onto the next game with what we’ve learned over the course of pre-season and the first few games.”
“We want to keep getting results and keep the performance levels high.”
It’s back to the League this weekend and Gillingham will pose a different test for Micky Mellon’s men.
“Completely different challenge,” said Micky.
“That’s what’s so great about the game in this country. You’ve got to be adaptable and got to be ready to adapt to whatever you face tomorrow, which we guess as managers and coaches how it’s going to go.
“But, then we go prepared to think that if it doesn’t quite go that way or something different happens then we will be able to do something else in order to get over it.
“The important thing is you take things half by half and you train in between that. You try and keep improving and you get to a stage where you believe that you’re giving yourself the best chance of getting results in every game. That’s what you’re building towards.
“But, football is what it is, you just don’t know. That’s why it’s such a fantastic game, there’s nothing every nailed on. So, you’ve got to make sure you give yourself the best possible chance that things fall your way.
“Every week challenges are different, that’s what’s so fantastic about this country. And then you’ve got the seasons and the weather to consider so that’s what makes it such a great challenge all the time.”
Ivan Toney and George Waring both had good chances on Tuesday and Micky believes it won’t be long before they start scoring on a more regular basis.
“Ivan actually scored against Chesterfield, Micky announced.
“People credited the goal to Junior but he actually side-footed it in, so we have to put that one straight.”
“But, they want to score goals, they will do. I believe I have strikers here who will score goals, we’ve just got to keep creating the chances and those boys will do that they’ve always done and take those chances and we will win some football games.”
It’s been a hard start to the season with games coming thick and fast. Shaun Whalley remains out with a calf problem, but Micky is hoping everyone else will be fit to face The Gills.
“We’ve got some niggles and some things that would be a concern if the game was today, but we will give them another 24 hours and see how they go over night, because they’re the types of ones that go as quickly as you come if you like,” Micky said.
“But, we won’t be looking for any excuses. Anyone who comes in the team is a first team player now. Like I said on Wednesday night, they’re all considered first team players, so I won’t be looking for any excuses. The team wouldn’t be weakened by bringing any of them in.
“The accumulation of games and travelling have got to take their toll, science would prove that. It’s not me trying to make excuses or anything like that, I think it’s just a fact that if you do the travelling that we’ve done, the amount of games that we’ve had to do in such a short space of time. I think at some stage they’re going to take a bit of toll on the group.
“That’s why we’ve tried to use the group rather than overuse players wherever possible. If we think we can change something around to keep away from a big host of injuries then we’ll try and do that.
“It’s good to be at home, we enjoy playing here and after the week that we’ve had, the travelling, it’s good to get back on our own pitch in front of our own fans again,” Micky added.
