The Gaffer looks ahead to the Bury trip
Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon is looking forward to taking on Bury this weekend.Town are going in search of back to back victories on the road after a 3-2 win over Oldham last week.
The gaffer told the press that he was expecting a difficult game on Saturday:
“Another tough game, it always is when you go to the North West. There's nothing in the games, it’s all margins. It will be another tough game against my old pal Flicker's (Dave Flitcroft) team, they always are. They're very tight, well contested games between two groups of players who are determined to win for the football clubs.”
Town currently have seven points after two wins in their last three games and Micky hopes he can put a run of results together:
“I know I've got to win games, that's always in my thoughts. I've got to work hard on the performance of the team as individuals and as a group. That's what I've got to keep doing and I keep sticking to that, and I keep trying to keep the level of performances high, standards high, good habits, but certainly it's good to get that victory. That's two of the last three league games we've won now so we've got to keep winning games. That's what the be all and end all of football is.”
“Even when you win the games people will still find a way of saying we could have won it a bit better, so you can never really win, but it's important that you get the results. It would be fantastic to get a run, it would be great. But, it's the next game and it's now the most important and we've got to try and get another victory.”
Micky will be in the opposite dug out to his former Barnsley colleague Dave Flitcroft on Saturday, but he admits that a Shrewsbury victory is the only thing on his mind:
“It's great, he's one of my best pals in football, so it will be an eagerly contested result for both of us, that we both want to get, done in the right spirit and we'll both want to try and get one over each other, that's what friends do. But, the most important thing is that it's not about me and him, it's about Shrewsbury getting a victory, and that's what it's going to be all about for me.”
“I try and keep consistently at the level that I need to be to try and win us games. I don't get too low or too high, because we all know what football's like, it's such a tough game to predict. But, I just try and stay as level as I possibly can or try and get to where I need to be regardless of who we are playing.”
This week was the first week where Town haven’t had a midweek fixture and the manager was pleased to get plenty of work done on the grass:
“We've definitely got time on the training pitch that's for sure and we've not had any travelling or anything like that, so it's been good to get a week’s training in and prepare over three or four days for the Bury game rather than one recovery day that's been happening, so it’s been good. But, of course we've got to go out there on Saturday and show that, and perform in the way we know we can and get a result.”
Micky gave an update as to the injury situation with two members of the squad returning from the physio bed:
“Leitch-Smith was injured for the weekend, he had a hamstring injury so he couldn’t take part, but he's training now. Jim O'Brien is now training with us, he's trained the last few days. I think the only one that's injured at the minute's Ian Black, who’s not trained all week, so we will see how he is tomorrow.”
