Gaffer's thoughts after the 4-3 win over Charlton
Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst was delighted that his side got the three points in what was an incredible match at the Greenhous Meadow.Town took the lead early on, but were forced to regain that lead a further two times as Ricky Holmes scored a hat-trick for the visitors
Paul admitted that it was an exciting game and one that he allowed himself to enjoy.
“It was a wow game for the neutral and for our fans when you come out on the right side of the result, but I hadn't even sat down and they nearly score, which kind of set the tone for the night”, said Paul.
“I don’t know how many attempts at goal both teams had but it kind of to’d and fro’d. They started well, then we seemed to get on top, then they came back and then we got back on top again.
“At 3-2 I think we could have made it 4-2 and would have given us a bit of breathing space, but they made it three-all.
“Overall, I’m just delighted to get the three points.”
Seven high quality goals were scored on a night which certainly favoured the attackers, but former defender Paul couldn’t help but comment on some of the defending.
“Great credit to the players and it’s a great advert in one sense, but I don’t think anyone will be winning awards for defensive play”, smiled Paul.
“Having said that I think the way they set up and came to attack can lead to an open game no matter how you set up to try and stop it, because we want to push on as well.
“The first two goals for them you have to say shows what you get when you spend X amount of pounds on a player. He’s a quality player and he ends up with the match ball in the end as well.”
One man who stood out was Louis Dodds and Paul was quick to praise the former Port Vale man.
“I brought Doddsy back in because I just felt that Rodders the games were starting to catch up with him a little bit”, Hurst said.
“It’s one of those changes that has worked. Doddsy comes in, does what he does and works extremely hard. He’s not going to pick the ball up and beat players like Rodders or Shaun Whalley, but he’s got other qualities to his play.
“Tyler came in and at times I thought he looked a class above. It was a great finish which he will be extremely pleased with and he worked extremely hard.
“So, the changes in a lot of ways have worked tonight and it sets us up nicely for another home game on Saturday.”
