Community visit nursing homes as part of Meadow Memories initiative
Shrewsbury Town in the Community paid a visit to Radbrook Nursing Home last week, as part of their Meadow Memories initiative.Health and Inclusion Officer Amy Edwards, joined by ex players Steve Cross, Andy Tretton and Ken Mulhearn, spoke to the residents about their careers, fondest Town memories and had a look through scrapbooks and programmes dating back to the 1960’s.
Also catching the eye was the coracle donated to the club earlier this month by Tim Speller, which is believed to be the last one ever made by Fred Davies in 1992.
Steve Cross attended his first Meadow Memories event a week previous at Hartlands Residental Home, and this time found himself back at the home where he once worked part time as a physio.
He was delighted to be able to make the visit, and said: “To be involved in the community is fantastic. Amy has asked me to come along and do these talks and chat to people at the nursing homes, and it’s great for me.
“I love talking football with people. If they’re big Shrewsbury Town fans too, then even better.
“Hats off to Shrewsbury Town, for the way they’ve envisaged what people need in Shrewsbury. They have done fantastic jobs combining all the different aspects of helping people, and anything I can do or ex players can do to help that along (then they will).
“I’ve spoken to people this morning who remember going to the Gay Meadow in the early 50’s and 60’s, and it brings back memories for them.
“We’ll do anything to help the community along its way.
“It’s amazing because the people have gone through some of the memorabilia we’ve brought here today and they’ve remembered things that’s jogged my memory as well!
“A lady that I met in there, she used to be a regular season ticket holder and used to sit at the front row as we used to come out of the tunnel and she can remember things that, as I say, jogged back my memory and it brought back some fantastic moments this morning.
“Just chatting to her for a couple of minutes, it was fantastic.”
