Dom Smith Post Fleetwood Town

5 December 2016

Defender reacts to FA Cup game and looks ahead to a replay

Town defender Dom Smith says luck just wasn’t on Shrewsbury’s side as they came away from Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Fleetwood Town with a goalless draw.

Somehow Town failed to score after hitting the woodwork on several occasions, and will have to make the return trip to Fleetwood as they look to book their place in the third round.

And Smith feels that on another day the chances that hit the post would have gone in, and made things a lot more rewarding for his side.

“It’s obviously frustrating to end the game 0-0,” he said. “Doddy’s (Louis Dodd’s) chance was quite remarkable, bounced off both the posts, but I think all in all, we kept a clean sheet and did well.

“As soon as it hit the post the first time I started celebrating already! But when it hit the other it was a bit weird to see it not end up in the goal.

“We hit the post three times today, luck just wasn’t on our side. Another day we win it 3-0, but I think the lads did well.

“But as a defender, it’s vital to keep a clean sheet, and make it hard for teams to score.”

Smith admitted not being able to amend the 3-0 defeat to Uwe Rösler’s side back in November made the result that bit more frustrating, but was confident of Town’s chances going into the replay on 13th December.

“I think the lads wanted a bit of revenge, obviously not to score, that’s the frustrating part, said Dom.

“I think come the replay we’ll sneak a win. We’ll go back to the first game, the 3-0. We still owe them, to win it away. To do that, will be justified of this game because we should have won.”
