Irish midfielder looking forward to the trip to The Den
Gary Deegan is hopeful he can get his shooting boots on when Town take on Millwall on Saturday.Town go into the game on the back of three games without a goal and whilst Deegan believes things are getting better at the other end, he is confident that the team will start scoring soon.
“We’ve stopped goals going in and I think now we need to start putting a few in the onion bag and getting a few points on the board,” Deegan told the Press.
“The last time I scored was Hibs vs Aberdeen, which is over two years ago, but we’ve been doing a bit of shooting practice today and it looked good, so if we can put that into games we should be okay.
“I like to see myself as an all-round midfielder and I like to think I do a lot of things well and if I can contribute to the team with a goal, I’m happy to help out.
“I think performances are there and results don’t reflect that. Obviously, we know the position we are in, but we’re only one or two wins away from putting something together.
“You can’t keep looking over your shoulder. You’ve got to concentrate on what we’ve got to do and I think that the boys are fully concentrated on what we’ve got to do and we’ll take that into Saturday.”
Millwall is notoriously one of the most difficult places to go as an away team, but Deegan believes that Town can keep The Den faithful quiet.
“Playing Millwall away is always tough, but we’ve got nothing to fear,” said Gary.
“We are all confident that we can get something out of the game. We’ve had 5 clean sheets now in 7 and we’ve stopped the silly goals going in and if we can start creating and putting the ball in the net that would be great.
“I think we can go there and not have to force the game onto them. We can see what they are about, get a feel for it, stay in the game and have a platform to go from there.
“Away from home we need to start a little bit brighter and not be on the back foot. Sheffield United we got off to a terrible start and you’re right on the back foot, which invites pressure on and we can’t do that on Saturday.”
Town have improved dramatically since Paul Hurst became manager at the end of October and the Irish born midfielder has been impressed with the work ethic he has installed.
“The new manager’s been really good,” continued Deegan.
“He doesn’t say a lot, but what he says is direct and we all get the message and it all seems to be working out.
“The intensity is better. We’re playing with a purpose and looking forward. I just think everything he’s brought to the club has raised the tempo.
“You think the honeymoon period is over once you’ve impressed the manager and you step off the gas a bit, but that hasn’t been the case. When training isn’t at the tempo Doigy’s not afraid to tell us and that’s the way it should be.”
