Stefan Payne joins Town

Barnsley striker joins on loan until the end of the season

Shrewsbury Town are delighted to announce the signing of Stefan Payne on loan until the end of the season.

Stefan joined Barnsley in the summer after two successful seasons with Dover Athletic where he scored 33 league goals.

The 25 year old has made seven Championship appearances so far this season and is looking forward to making his mark at Shrewsbury.

“The main target is obviously to play in the Championship but when a League One club like Shrewsbury come along it’s definitely an easy decision to come here, Stefan told ShrewsWeb.

“I just want to come here, get games and score goals. I can do a bit of everything really. I like getting in behind, taking people on, but I also like doing the nitty gritty side, backing in, flicking on balls, holding it up, so I’d like to say I’m an all-rounder.

“Every striker is lying if they say they don’t like scoring goals. There’s no better feeling in the world than when that ball hits the net.”

Payne has had an interesting career to date which has seen him play for the likes of Sutton United and AFC Hornchurch, whilst also signing for Fulham as a youngster. He has come across Paul Hurst before and has been impressed by what he has seen.

“I’ve had some experiences”, said Payne.

“Some ups, some downs, but I’m here now and I just want to concentrate on staying here and scoring goals. I’ve been a bit unlucky with injury so far this season, but at the start it was going really well and now it’s time to just get games for the rest of the season and see where that takes you.

“It’s all about scoring goals for me and to be given that chance in League One to score goals is great. For a manager to want you and for the way he expresses himself about you and wants you to come to the club it’s a no brainer to join here.

“I’ve played against Paul’s teams a few times and they’ve always been very good. Obviously Grimsby have come out of non-league last year when I was at Dover, so it will be very interesting to work under him.”

Payne admits that the competition at Shrewsbury is high, but he is confident that Town have what it takes to climb the league.

“It’s very good competition, but as a striker it’s good to have competition because you raise your game”, said Stefan.

“My target is to come here, play games and obviously help Shrewsbury climb the league. You can see from the past three or four results that you can easily get out of it and hopefully I can come and add to that and help climb the table.”
