A quick look back at what happened in years gone by
Club Statistician Kevin Davies has had a look through the archives and found some of the stories which have made the headlines between the 16th and 22nd of January.16.01. Ian Atkins (1957) and Ian ‘Danny’ Bowers (1955) were both born on this date.
17.01.1982. Ian Atkins scores five as Town put eight past Caernarfon Town at the Oval Ground.
Town’s 8-1 win saw them advance into the next round of the Welsh Cup, in what was the first ever Welsh Cup tie played on a Sunday.
18.01.1964. Eight Town players are injured as the reserve side lose 7-0 to Arsenal in the Football Combination.
The Combination was a competition for reserve sides which eventually folded in 2012.
19.01.1924. Arthur Cashmore nets a second half consolation goal as Town slip to a 2-1 defeat at home to Whitchurch in the Shropshire Senior Cup.
Whitchurch went on to win the competition that year.
20.01.1962. Grimsby inflict Town with their first ever defeat on this date, Grimsby leaving the Gay Meadow with all two points after a 2-1 victory.
21.01.2012. Town recorded back-to-back home league wins as they overcame the league leaders, Southend, 2-1.
The victory came at the Greenhous Meadow after fan favourites James Collins and Jermaine Grandison both netted, Marvin Morgan had earlier been sent off.
22.01.1974. Town sign Alex McGregor from Hibernian for a small fee, as the winger joins fellow Glaswegians, Jake King, Ian Roberts and Mike Kearney in the squad.
McGregor went on to make 49 league appearances for Town scoring seven goals before he departed to Aldershot in 1976.
