Young striker looking forward to playing for Town
New loan signing George Waring says he will go into every game with the target of scoring a goal for Shrewsbury Town rather than setting a season tally.The 6 foot 5 inch striker has joined Town on loan from Stoke City until January and the former Everton man admits he can’t wait to get going in League One.
He told ShrewsWeb that he is going to put everything into his loan spell at Greenhous Meadow.
“I’d like to think I could fill the role (of a target striker) and maybe have a bit more to my game as well,” he said.
“I obviously want to play to my strengths and use my height and be a physical presence.
“Playing in the Premier League is the ambition for any footballer so I have got to try and take my opportunity here and see what comes of it.
“I always go into every game thinking ‘score today’ and if that comes about maybe half way through the season you can set yourself a target but to start with I just think about trying to score in every game.
“I hope to do my best and score some goals and help Shrewsbury reach their goals this season.
“It is a loan move that can benefit everyone involved so I will be trying my best to make that happen.”
The Potters youngster arrives at Town alongside fellow Stoke player Moha, who came through the ranks at Barcelona before arriving on these shores.
And Waring says the left sided Moha will excite Town fans.
“Mo is lightning quick. He is still trying to get used to the English language, he is trying his best!” said the 21-year-old.
“He is a good lad who will get his head down and excite the fans.
“I heard about the loan maybe a week ago that it might be happening. I think it was a case of Stoke wanting some more minutes in my legs before I came over.
“With the pre-season I had I went away with the first team but didn’t get that many minutes on the pitch so I think they just wanted those minutes into my legs then I was raring to go.”
Waring came through Everton’s famous youth set-up before joining Stoke. But he says he knows about League One thanks to time he spent at Barnsley.
“I came through Everton’s youth team then went to Stoke at 19,” he said.
“I live just past Chester so it is not too far away for me. I joined the year Mark Hughes first came in and from the players they are signing there now you can see the philosophy is completely different.
“Not last season but the season before I was at Barnsley for six months and had a good time there and we just missed out on the play-offs so I know a bit about League One and I know it is going to be tough.
“It is a completely different style of football compared to the under-21s. It is something I am embracing and looking forward to. It is going to be a test but I am up for it.
“It is an opportunity for me and hopefully hard work will pay off and it will all come together.”
