Tavernier and Akwasi loans over but GT takes a look at McSweeney

Graham Turner, having lost the services of two of Shrewsbury Town's loanees in Akwasi Asante and James Tavernier, is taking the chance to have a close look at former Leyton Orient right back Leon McSweeney this week.

Tavernier has returned to Newcastle United owing to injury while striker Asante, having impressed in last weekend's 2-0 win over Swindon, has been recalled by Birmingham City.

"It looks as though James is going to have his metatarsal pinned," said GT. "It's a previous injury which has re-occured and it looks as though he's got to have surgery on it so obviously he'll be out for some time with that one.

"Then we've got the double whammy of Akwasi being called back to Birmingham.

"When you look at his contribution on Saturday, it would have been nice to go to Rotherham this weekend with the same side, but unfortunately we've lost him.

"I think initially we were looking at a loan until Christmas for him but Birmingham changed their mind and wanted us to take him when we did, which was 28 days ago, so if anything happened at their club they had the opportunity to call him back fairly early in the season and unfortunately that's what they've done."

The manager said it was too soon to contemplate the possibility of a return to the Greenhous Meadow for the striker at some stage in the future.

"It's too early to say yet," he confirmed. "We'll have to see what takes place at this club and who we bring in.

"Certainly Akwasi last season did okay for us and going into this season he looked as though he could score in the pre-season games and we missed him, his strength up front, in the first three matches.

"But he made a big contribution to the victory against Swindon so it's a shame he's missing, but these things happen."

GT now plans to keep a close eye on McSweeney in training this week having handed the 29-year-old Irishman a run out for the reserves in the 2-1 Central League win at Morecambe last night.

The manager added: "He hasn't got a club and obviously we've had the problem at right back although I thought Connor Goldson had probably his best game at right back on Saturday against Swindon and he's staking a claim there.

"Leon McSweeney's played quite a few games, I think 60 odd games for Leyton Orient in the last two seasons. He's without a club so we just thought we would have a look at him and see how it works out this week.

"He's with us the full week and obviously played at Morecambe last night so we'll see how things transpire."
