Town striker looking to keep on hitting the net
Striker Scott Vernon is hoping to carry on his encouraging goalscoring form for Shrewsbury Town when the Sky Bet League 2 season kicks off on August 9.The former Aberdeen and Blackpool marksman came off the bench to score twice against Championship side Watford on Saturday and take his pre-season goal tally to three in as many games.
His late double ensured Micky Mellon's side came from 2-0 down to rescue a draw against a strong Hornets side.
"I don't want to use up all the goals in pre-season!" joked Vernon, who hit his brace in the final seven minutes of the match.
"Hopefully there are a lot more to come, I've always scored goals in my career and there's no reason why that should stop now.
"We're working hard as a team on fitness and tactics which is only going to benefit us when the season starts."
His first goal came about from an expert chip after Liam Lawrence's ball forward, and then with almost the last kick of the game, the Manchester-born striker cooly slotted in for his and Town's second after good work by Arran Wildig and Jean Louis Akpa Akpro.
"It's always nice to come on and score goals," said Vernon.
"I'm just doing my job, that's the name of the game. I'm happy to get a run out, that's the most important thing, and keep the fitness levels ticking over.
"We're happy in the changing room that we've clawed our way back from a two goal deficit to draw the game.
"For the first, the ball from Liam was top class and the goalkeeper got caught in no-man's-land.
" It was a good second half performance once we'd got to grips with the way they were playing."
Vernon also says the players are happy with the progress being made especially given the number of new faces, with fifteen signings brought in by new manager Mellon.
"I'm very encouraged so far," he said.
"We've had three good games against tough opposition. There's a lot more to come and we've got to improve in areas but we'll get there and by the start of the season we'll be ready.
"t was like the first day at school when we came back for training with so many new players.
"They're all good lads, we'll keep the spirit going and keep doing things together to enhance that and it will only help us on a Saturday."
