Experienced defender bolsters squad ahead of pre-season
Shrewsbury Town have further boosted their defensive options by signing experienced central defender Tamika Mkandawire.
He is the third defender to join the club this summer following Alex McQuade and Dave Winfield.
The 30-year-old's most recent club was Championship side Millwall although he enjoyed a lengthy loan spell at Southend United last season, playing for them at Wembley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.
Mkandawire began his career at West Bromwich Albion but made the breakthrough to first team football under Graham Turner at Hereford United.
He clocked up more than a century of games for the Bulls before also playing over 100 matches for Leyton Orient following his move to Brisbane Road in the summer of 2007.
It was then on to Millwall in June 2010 and he was voted player of the year by the fans in his first season at The Den.
But he is now ready for a fresh challenge and is pleased to have made the move north to Shrewsbury.
"I'm delighted to have signed," said Mkandawire, who has also played in midfield. "It's good to team up with Graham Turner, Tony Ford and John Trewick again and I'm looking forward to an exciting season.
"The move had been in the mix for a little while but there was a lot for me to contemplate, obviously moving from London, but it's the right decision for me and my wife and we've got a child on the way.
"I'm very much looking forward to moving to the area and playing for Shrewsbury."
Mkandawire admitted the chance to work under Graham Turner once again was a real pull.
"He knows me very well and I obviously know how he works," he said. "That's a massive pull for me to come and play for him again and hopefully we can be as successful as we were the last time."
As for the season ahead in League One, Mkandawire, who will meet his new team mates when Town begin pre-season training next Wednesday, added: "It's a big league, there's a lot of big teams in it, and we'll be looking to challenge those and do as best as we can."
