Town’s youngsters travelled up to Macclesfield for their re-arranged Youth Alliance game looking to build on the weekend’s victory over Preston.  With the first team playing at Colchester on the Tuesday night this had meant the youth team filling in for the reserve fixture at Wigan on the Tuesday afternoon.

There were concerns before the game that tiredness may play its part and affect Town’s performance and this was the case in the end.

The performance, effort and work rate were there but playing two games in two days just meant the Town couldn’t get going against Macclesfield.

After the game Town’s Academy Manager Steve Reece acknowledged that tiredness did play its part in the result:”It was always going to be a tough test for the lads to play two games in two days and that was the case in the Macclesfield game.

“We can’t question the attitude, work rate and performance in the game but it was just a case of fatigue making it a hard game for us.

“This was noticeable as we rarely troubled the Macclesfield goal and didn’t have too many shots during the 90 minutes.

“It’s now a case of get some rest and then prepare for the long trip to Carlisle on Saturday and hopefully the boys can bounce back.”
