Goldson pleased with Bury result, goal and clean sheet

Defender Connor Goldson - back on the scoresheet against Bury on Tuesday evening - has paid tribute to hat-trick hero Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro
after the Frenchman helped Shrewsbury to their biggest win of the season.

The 5-0 romp against one of Town's promotion rivals was Shrewsbury's third win on the trot and made it eight victories from nine home games this season.

Former Bury loanee Akpa Akpro, who had only scored once for Town, also became the first Shrewsbury player to hit a treble since Tom Eaves against Crawley in April last year.

"We were buzzing for him," said skipper Goldson. "We always say in training he does everything but score and when he does we call him 'Premier League Jean.' The way he plays and when he's finishing like that, holds it up, wins headers, runs away from people - he's got everything."

It was also another clean sheet for Town who've only conceded twice at home this season, in games against Tranmere and Cheltenham.

"We've only conceded two goals in nine games at the Greenhous Meadow," he said. "We feel comfortable at the back and with Jayson Leutwiler in goal. All we talk about is making sure we keep clean sheets. We organise each other, concentrate and we make sure we do that every game."

Jordan Clark also got on the scoresheet after coming on as a substitute, and it was Goldson's headed goal from a Bobby Grant corner which gave Town the cushion of a second. The defender was also denied a few minutes earlier when another header went straight at the Bury 'keeper.

"The first header which was saved was probably better," admitted Goldson. "Bobby Grant's delivery is good and luckily it landed right on my head and I scored."

He also paid tribute to Town's performance, arguably their best of the season ahead of another home game against Portsmouth on Saturday.

"Bury have come here and thought they can play a nice open game but we weren't going to let that happen," he said. "We've come right out of the blocks and got a good victory. They passed if around quite nicely but they didn't have many chances and we knew we could take them to the sword. We said at half time we didn't want to sit back and rest on our laurels. We wanted to put the foot on the gas and we did that in the second half getting a couple more goals.

"Everyone was saying how good Bury were and how no-one can play against them because of the way they pass the ball. Well they've come to Shrewsbury and we beat them 5-0. We have to make sure we take it into the next game against Portsmouth on Saturday and get the three points."

Goldson also revealed he's a little richer after winning a bet with Town midfielder Dave McAllister, before the Irishman went on loan to Stevanage.

"I had a few chances at the start of the season and he bet me £20 that I wouldn't score a header before January," he joked. "It's come early in October so I'm going to get him to transfer it to my bank!"
