Under-18s beaten in friendly at Foxes' training ground

Shrewsbury Town’s youth team could not prevent defeat against Leicester City’s Under-17s in a friendly at the Foxes’ training Ground on Tuesday.

Kicking off in the afternoon, ahead of the first-team Capital One Cup game at the King Power Stadium on the same night, Town fell behind after two minutes when striker Harvey Barnes found an empty net after being set up by Kienan King.

Ian Dawes’ side nearly responded five minutes later, although Jeff Watkins, playing in attack, was just unable to stretch and reach Ethan Jones’ low cross.

Town goalkeeper Harry Lewis had a busy afternoon and he had to be on hand to tip around a low effort from a trialist, before Thomas Dombrouskis smashed the crossbar for the Foxes with a long range effort.

However, the young Shrews had another chance to equalise when George Hassall managed to loop a header towards goal from Tom King’s corner, and Leicester goalkeeper Max Bramley had to reach up to tip the ball away.

The task became even tougher for Dawes’ side, though, as Leicester’s King brought the ball down inside the box in the 39th minute and drilled beyond a helpless Lewis.

HALF-TIME: Leicester City 2-0 Shrewsbury Town

The Foxes continued to create chances after the break and Toby Fura rattled Town’s right-hand post with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Shrews defender Ben Burton was also on hand to clear off the goal line after a trialist had sent an effort beyond Lewis and towards the Town goal.

There was nothing the first-year scholar in Town’s goal could do about the third and fourth goals, either.

An unstoppable strike from the left of the box by a trialist gave Leicester their third in the 65 th minute, before Barnes grabbed his second with a strike from outside the box which cannoned in off a post.

Town brought on young Jacob Farleigh at the end and the substitute made an instant impact by finishing off an intricate passing move, involving Nathan Millis and Hassall, by sliding in at the near post.

Farleigh could have had a second with seven minutes left when he pounced on a defensive mistake from the Foxes, but his effort one-on-one was saved by Bramley.

And there was not enough time for an unlikely fightback as Leicester ran out winners in the friendly.
