Premier League right-back joins up with Town
Graham Turner has boosted his defensive options just over a week before the start of the new League One season by signing Newcastle United defender James Tavernier on an initial month's loan.
Tavernier, 21, impressed the manager when he played for Shrewsbury in Tuesday's 4-2 pre-season friendly victory over Birmingham City.
Tavernier, a right back, made seven first team appearances for Newcastle last season, playing in the Premier League, FA Cup, Capital One Cup and Europa League.
He has also enjoyed successful spells on loan to Sheffield Wednesday, Carlisle United, MK Dons and Newcastle's non-League neighbours Gateshead.
The paperwork on the move was completed Friday afternoon and manager Graham Turner is pleases to have finally added him to his squad:”James is a player we identified as one of our targets towards the end of last season.
“Newcastle wanted him to go to Championship club at first but in the end our perseverance has paid off.
“He is a good player and has experience for the Newcastle first team as well as loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Carlisle United.
“Fan’s will have got an early look at James in Tuesday night’s game and will have seen what he has to offer us.”
