Demetriou On Southend And Chelsea

26 September 2014

Defender wants to concentrate on league first

Defender Mickey Demetriou was more delighted than anybody at Shrewsbury Town to draw Chelsea in the Capital One Cup – but his mind is set on the game at Southend United on Saturday.

The 24-year-old has supported the Premier League leaders since childhood and got his dream reward of facing the Blues after helping Town to a 1-0 win over Norwich City in Round 4.

But the former Non-League man insists concentration on Town’s league form must take priority first.

“I’ve supported Chelsea for the last 17 years and it was the only draw I wanted,” said Demetriou.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be in six draws to have the possibility to play Chelsea and it’s finally come around!

“We’ve got six league games before that, though, so we need to concentrate on those, the gaffer’s got that into our heads.

“The most important thing is promotion to League One, so we need to concentrate on Southend away on Saturday.”

Demetriou played the full 90 minutes in the win over Championship side Norwich on Tuesday night.

And the defender is hoping his performance and work ethic can lead to more regular appearance in Town’s starting line-up.

“I was happy with my performance against Norwich, obviously I’ve missed the last couple of games,” said Demetriou.

“I’m hoping that can continue because I’ve been working hard on the training ground.
