Micky Mellon on Ian Dawes

27 June 2014

Manager pleased to have got the right person on board

Town today confirmed that Ian Dawes would be taking up the head of youth position at the club, a position which has been vacant since Bernard McNally moved on.

Micky Mellon has been searching for the right person to take over and after interviews by Micky, Jacko, Steve Reece and Matt Williams they believe they have appointed the right person to help continue the good work of the youth set-up.

With Ian’s experience at Liverpool’s Academy Micky believes that the right person is now in place at Shrewsbury Town.

“It is one appointment that I want to get right as we want to make sure we continue to make our own players”, said Micky.

“I wanted to get the right guy to make sure that we achieve that and I believe we have got that in Ian Dawes.

“He has great experience at Liverpool and I have had the pleasure of seeing him coach my own son and he impressed me back then.

“I thought he had a quality then and his manner with the kids has stuck with me ever since then.

“I was speaking to Mike Marsh on the Pro Licence course and asked him about Ian and he highly recommended him.”

Town finished the season with Ryan Woods, Tom Bradshaw, Connor Goldson and Jon Taylor in the starting line-up as well as several separate first year youth scholars travelling with the squad or making an appearance on the bench.

Micky believes that the club should be continuing to develop its own players and wants to do everything possible to continue that:”I’m passionate about producing home grown players that the fans can track the progress, it’s one of those romantic bits of football where you get a player who progresses right through the ranks.

“I want to make sure we give ourselves the right opportunity by getting the right people in the right positions throughout the club.

“There are fantastic people already in position coaching in the Academy and Ian will add to those qualities and keep it moving forward.”
