Youngster quickly getting used to being a pro

It can be a daunting experience for youngsters, stepping into the first team dressing room, but Shrewsbury Town's teenage winger Jack Gwilliams says he's quickly been made to feel welcome.

Gwilliams, offered his first professional contract by Graham Turner at the end of last season following some impressive displays for the club's youth and reserve teams, has thrown himself into pre-season training.

And while it's tough - it was never going to be anything different! - he's enjoying the experience as he bids to push for a first team spot.

"It's been good," said Gwilliams, an 18-year-old local lad. "Some of the running's been a bit hard, but you've got to get yourself through it and I'm enjoying it.

"It's back to football and you can get bored when you're not doing it."

Gwilliams added his friendship with fellow young pro Ryan Woods had made his transition to the pro ranks a little easier.

"It can be a bit daunting at the start but you get to know the lads and soon start to feel at home," he said. "I'm good friends with Woodsy so that helps."

Gwilliams was delighted to be told there was a professional contract waiting for him when he completed his two-year scholarship at the Greenhous Meadow.

"I was very happy when I heard the news," he said. "There's nothing better than saying you're a professional footballer. It's nice and I'm enjoying it. I just want to train well and I'll hopefully get my chance."
