Grandison Wants No Early Goals Conceded At Plymouth

3 October 2014

Defender wants to avoid repeat of Southend start

Defender Jermaine Grandison insists Shrewsbury Town must avoid conceding an early goal at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Town travel to the South West to face the Pilgrims in Sky Bet League 2 (3pm kick-off) off the back of defeat at Southend United - having conceded the winner in the game's second minute.

And Grandison wants to make sure his side do not suffer from an early setback at Home Park at the weekend.

"First of all we have been talking about not conceding early goals and how important it is not to make mistakes," said Grandison.

"If you don't concede early goals you can get into the game, start passing the ball and creating chances.

"We do create chances but we need to start taking them and not conceding early goals."

"If we do go a goal down it's about picking our heads up and getting the next goal.

"It would be really nice to score first but if it doesn’t happen we need to concentrate on the next goal and getting the next goal after that as well."

Grandison was part of the backline which fell to the narrow defeat at Roots Hall on Saturday but feels Town are still heading on the right track.

"We played well (against Southend) and we created chances, we just didn't score," he said.

"The lads are working hard in training to get everything right and improve the away form.

"But is has still been a really good start. We are in the playoffs we just need to kick on and improve our away form and keep winning at home."

The 23-year-old has been happy with his own recent form but admits there is still plenty of room for improvement.

"Personally I think I am doing well at the moment, but I still want to keep improving and getting better," said Grandison.

"We all work hard everyday in training to improve. My passing and crossing is where I really want to improve but I know I need to work on all aspects of my game.

"I am still working wit the physios and in the gym every day before training to make sure I am keeping on top of my flexibility.

"But I'm feeling fit at the moment and I'm playing games which helps. I feel really good at the moment so I just need to keep it up."
