GT Expecting Quiet Day

2 September 2013

Gaffer not expecting many deals on deadline day

The transfer window closes for permanent deals at 11pm this evening and Graham Turner isn’t expecting much transfer action at the Greenhous Meadow.

The Shrewsbury Town manager has been calmly going about bolstering his squad over recent weeks and is happy with the quality of his squad.

As the countdown to 11pm fast approaches GT is expecting a quite few hours:”I think it’s going to be a quiet day, with us signing Curtis Main on Friday that has added to our options in the squad.

“It is now one week until the emergency window opens and at the moment there are no plans to bring anyone in on a permanent basis.”

One of the bright spots of Town’s recent games has been the emergence of the young players in the Town squad.  Ryan Woods made his Town debut in an unaccustomed right-back position at Rotherham but has looked a natural in the position:”Sometimes you have to be prepared to give the youngsters an opportunity and if we did have a big squad or more experienced players then the likes of Ryan Woods doesn’t get the chance.

“If we had more defensive cover at right-back then Woodsy might not have got that chance there but in the two games he has played he has been outstanding.

“I’ve never been afraid to put the youngsters in and give them a chance and the pleasing thing is we have got four players in the squad who have come through our youth policy, it should give everyone the encouragement to follow them.”

With Dave Winfield set to get a run out in the reserves next week and John Marsden making good progress the options in the Town squad are being to look a lot stronger.  GT is happy with the
numbers in the squad with the first team squad bolstered by a few loan signing:”If you ask any manager he will tell you that he would like more players in their squad.

“If everyone is fit them I’m not unhappy with the size of the squad and I am certainly happy with some of the quality that we have in there.

“When Dave Winfield recovers and John Marsden is fit again, and with the likes of youngsters such as Dom Smith and Jack Gwilliams, then if we keep say three loan players then I’m happy with the size of the squad.”

The injuries to Winfield and Marsden as well as the one to loanee James Tavernier shows that you have to have a little luck when it comes down to injuries:”It’s part and parcel of the problems that managers face and what you don’t want to happen is for injuries to come at the start of the season.

“You want to get a few points on the board and everyone to have the confidence that we are a good team, but if you get the knocks in the early part of the season then people start questioning everything.

“We now see that with Manchester United, they’ve lost one game at Liverpool and people then say it is a club in decline, which is a load of nonsense.”
