Defender set to sign today

Young defender GT's first signing ahead of the new season

Shrewsbury Town are set to complete the first signing of the close season with former Bolton Wanderers defender Alex McQuade due to put pen to paper today.

McQuade, a left back who can also play at the heart of the back four, impressed manager Graham Turner during a couple of reserve team run outs towards the end of last season and has also caught the eye when he has trained with the Town squad.

McQuade, 20, was recently released by Bolton Wanderers where he was a reserve team regular alongside Tom Eaves, the striker who enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Greenhous Meadow this season.

"Alex is coming over to sign for us from Bolton on a one year contract," said the manager. "He impressed us in the two reserve matches he's played and we've had him watched on a number of occasions for Bolton's development side.

"He's a player who has got a lot going for him and he's got a lot of potential.

"He's another 20-year-old and he will add to that, almost our development squad, that can work well together, can improve together and be the nucleus of the future for the club.

"He can play left-sided central defender as well. We've obviously got Joe Jacobson who is established at left back and has played really well for us towards the end of the season and responded well to being made skipper.

"But Alex, I'm sure, will put Joe under pressure for that left back spot."
