Town sign Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Jacko strengthens the squad ahead of the Brentford game

Mike Jackson has strengthened his Shrewsbury Town squad ahead of Saturday's home match against leaders Brentford by signing Peterborough United winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on an initial month's loan.

It is the third signing completed by the caretaker manager in just over a week after he also brought in Wigan Athletic midfielder Fraser Fyvie and Celtic striker Bahrudin Atajic.

Mendez-Laing came off the bench to score a spectacular winning goal for Peterborough against Shrewsbury earlier this season.

Born in Birmingham, he started his career at Wolves before joining Peterborough after impressing on loan.

The 21-year-old also spent time on loan to both Sheffield United and Portsmouth.

Mike Jackson said he was pleased to have brought Mendez-Laing to the Greenhous Meadow after holding talks with Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson.

"He's something a little bit different for us," he said. "He's got that pace and power about him, that speed, and on his day he can destroy teams.

"We saw when he came on against us down there, bang, great goal. I've seen him a couple of times and he can make an impact.

"I think he's a good acquisition. He knows this level, League One, and he's local which doesn't mean he's travelling all over the place.

"He'll be a good addition."
