Clark's Pride At Debut Goals

31 August 2014

Two goal hero hoping to continue the good start to his Town career

In-form midfielder Jordan Clark has spoken of his pride at scoring twice against Luton Town - his first goals in the Football League.

Clark, released by home town club Barnsley in the summer, has been one of Shrewsbury's most impressive performers so far this season, and his brace against the Hatters made it five wins from the opening seven games in league and cup.

"Every day since I've been here has been the best day of my career but against Luton it was fantastic," said the 20 year old who signed for Town in pre-season after a trial.

"All the lads deserve credit because they were brilliant. It was a proud day for me and my family. I've been working hard for this. I can't explain it. I'm proud of the players as I never take credit for myself, it's a team game."

Clarke has family who live in Market Drayton and are big Town fans.

"My parents, family and friends will be over the moon, especially with the goals," he said. "I had a lot of family at the game so it's nice to put in a performance and get a win."

The goals came in each half, with the first a calm finish following Connor Goldson's perfectly executed ball over the top, while the second came about following a Clark free kick which was fumbled into the net by Luton goalkeeper Mark Tyler.

"The free kick wasn't the greatest, but it was on target so I've got to claim it as my goal," smiled Clark. "We needed a bit of luck just to get us over the line and we deserved the points from minute one. The first was after a fantastic ball from Connor, we've been working on that in training and that's how the manager wants us to play. It was my job to run in behind and cause problems for the defence. I've got away from my man, found space in the box and luckily it's gone in. It was a great start to the game and it's kicked us on from there. The last two games I've hit the bar and post so it's been coming."

It was another impressive performance from Shrewsbury who've taken 11 points from their opening five games and sit fourth in the table. Only Watford in the Championship have scored more goals in the Football League than Town this season. But Clark admits there's still room for improvement.

"The manager gave us a bit of a talking to at half time saying we needed to be more ruthless which is right," he said. "We should have been 3 or 4-nil up. We need to kill teams off.

The win against Luton was also the perfect follow up to the stunning midweek win at Premier League side Leicester City - the club's first ever away win at top flight opposition. Now Town will be hoping for more cup success, this time in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at League One Preston on Tuesday night.

"The fans are coming to support us home and away," he said. "We had 1100 at Leicester and we want to put the performances in to keep them coming more. We've had two tough draws with Leicester and it couldn't have got much tougher than Preston. We can beat anyone the way we're playing at the minute though. We go there on Tuesday night to win, we've got as good a chance as they have."

Clark also paid tribute to Micky Mellon, who worked with Clark at Barnsley when the Town boss was assistant manager at Oakwell.

"Full credit to the him," said Clark. "He was with me at Barnsley and he's brought me after it didn't work out there. We've got a great set of lads who have made it easy for me, and it's been down to me put the performances in. He's seen something in me and I can't thank him enough."
